Introduction

On January 12, 2026, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) achieved a significant milestone in indigenous defense capabilities by successfully conducting a flight test of the Third-Generation Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM). Conducted at the KK Ranges in Ahilya Nagar, Maharashtra, the test specifically validated the missile's top-attack capability against a moving target.

The MPATGM system is a lightweight, fire-and-forget weapon designed for infantry use to neutralize armored threats at ranges between 200 meters and 4 kilometers. Developed by the Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) in collaboration with production partners Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), the system incorporates advanced home-grown technologies including an Imaging Infrared (IIR) seeker and tandem warheads. This successful test marks a critical step forward in the "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" (Self-Reliant India) initiative, reducing dependence on foreign anti-armor systems.
