Introduction
In the fiscal year 2023–24, Rajasthan solidified its position as the leading wool-producing state in India, accounting for approximately 47% of the nation’s total output. Producing nearly 16 million kg of wool, the state’s dominance is driven by its unique arid and semi-arid climate, extensive grazing lands, and traditional sheep-rearing practices. Nationally, India produced 33.69 million kg of wool, supported by one of the largest sheep populations in the world. The majority of India's wool output, approximately 85%, is classified as carpet-grade, a sector heavily supported by indigenous breeds such as the Marwari and Chokla. Beyond industrial output, the wool sector remains a critical pillar for rural livelihoods and the national textile and handloom industries.

National Production Landscape
Data released by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD), under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, provides a comprehensive view of India’s wool industry for FY 2023–24.
Key Production Statistics
Category | Data (FY 2023–24) |
Total National Wool Production | ~33.69 million kg |
Rajasthan's Total Production | ~16 million kg |
Rajasthan's Share of National Output | ~47% |
India maintains a significant global standing in this sector due to having one of the world's largest sheep populations.
Rajasthan's Market Dominance
Rajasthan has emerged as the primary contributor to the Indian wool industry. Several factors contribute to the state’s high output:
Environmental Suitability: The state's arid and semi-arid climates are conducive to large-scale sheep rearing.
Land Use: Vast grazing lands provide the necessary resources for maintaining large flocks.
Cultural Practices: Traditional pastoral practices and a focus on sheep rearing among rural communities sustain high production levels.
Indigenous Breeds and Wool Quality
The quality and grade of wool produced in India are largely determined by indigenous sheep breeds.
Prominent Breeds in Rajasthan
Marwari: A prominent indigenous breed known for its resilience.
Chokla: Another key breed found in the state.
Wool Grading and Utilization
Carpet-Grade Wool: Approximately 85% of India’s wool is carpet-grade. The coarse wool produced by Rajasthan's indigenous breeds is ideally suited for the manufacturing of carpets and blankets.
Apparel-Grade Wool: Only a small proportion of the total national output is classified as apparel-grade or fine wool.
Leading Wool-Producing States
While Rajasthan is the undisputed leader, several other states contribute significantly to India's wool output. Following Rajasthan, the major producers include:
Jammu & Kashmir
Karnataka
Telangana
Gujarat
Maharashtra
Socio-Economic Impact
The wool sector is more than an industrial metric; it is a vital economic driver for specific demographics and industries:
Rural Livelihoods: Sheep rearing and wool production provide essential income for pastoral communities.
Industrial Linkages: The raw wool produced supports three major national industries:
Carpet manufacturing
Handloom production
General textile industries
